Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge certain calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
