The Grisly Cartoon Film Ending That Lingers Fans
Among all the adult-oriented cartoon movies I have personally viewed, no other has remained with me as much as the fear-filled conclusion of the viscerally violent as well as overwhelingly transgressive 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
In 2015’s, this Spanish writer-director crafted a dark, melancholy and frequently brutal universe that included a few small , forlorn hints of optimism.
While Unicorn Wars seems like it came from an impulse to expand animation further, the filmmaker stated that it was actually an attempt to express a universal, cross-cultural theme about “the shared root of each battle.”
That message is conveyed by means of a group of brightly hued teddy bears , openly inspired by a popular series of lovable characters.
Growing up in a community centered on warmongering as well as the military-industrial complex, a lot of these animals are obsessed with exterminating the mythical beasts, because of a sacred text that claims the bears they used to be rulers of the forest, until the unicorns drove them out.
A few haven’t fully accepted the propaganda, and would rather try out substances or engage sexually in the forest.
In contrast to their friendly equivalents, these colorful critters show sexual organs and definite sex drives.
For one especially vicious, cynical bear, the bear named Bluey, the conflict against the unicorns transforms into a road toward dominance — and specifically to supremacy above his gentler, nicer brother the character Tubby.
The character is a bully , an apparent psychopath , and when fear dominates his group and claims his comrades individually, he takes more and more power for himself, through ever more violent, damaging approaches.
Meanwhile, the horned creatures are suffering their own nightmare, through an expanding, destructive monster in their forest.
“Initially, it appears as a humorous movie,” the director commented. “However it evolves into a more dramatic and sorrowful movie. And in the finale, it becomes a terrifying movie.”
Unicorn Wars begins feeling a bit like one of the more whimsical features from a legendary filmmaker, which find a mischievous joy in allowing drawn beings swear, shoot each other, or sex each other up.
Subsequently it turns into closer to a more grim film by that same creator, featuring progressively visual gore , a tangible relation to genuine horror of battle.
In the finale, it is an outright Grand Guignol massacre.
The horror that turns the film a perfect Halloween viewing begins well before than indicated.
The Unicorn Wars is ideal for the most dedicated fans of gore, for enthusiasts of graphic films who want to see a film they’ve never watched previously, and are able to withstand a plot which delivers unflinching brutality.
See it in a dark room with no disturbances, and the finale will crawl under your skin and linger.
