New Year Celebrants Advised to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Forecast Throughout the UK
Meteorologists have indicated a chilly start to the new year, with snow likely across much of the UK. Revelers have been told to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Plans Go Ahead Despite Forecasts
The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are planned to take place, following last year's calling-off. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," said the weather service.
Fireworks Under Clear but Cold Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks displays, with no rain and good visibility. The mercury are due to be cold, so extra layers a necessity, as per forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Broad Snow Warnings for New Year's Day
Moving into Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on trains and buses.
The Mercury Forecast to Plummet Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to batter the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Health Alerts Released
At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities said this signified the weather was expected to trigger notable consequences across medical and care provision. This involves a likely increase in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
The message for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in safely, dressing for the cold is utterly key.
