Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars

He battled justice and justice prevailed.

A couple of months following getting a 27-year sentence for seeking to “eradicate” Brazil’s political system, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last looks jail-bound.

Imminent Incarceration

The convicted plotter – who had been under residential detention in his estate while a series of legal procedures and petitions unfold – is largely predicted to be jailed in the next few days, during mounting speculation that he will be transferred to a notorious maximum security prison.

Past Comments on Inmates

Over Bolsonaro’s long time in politics, the right-wing former soldier exhibited scant compassion for the country's inmates.

“For what reason must we give these dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he once pondered. “They ought to simply be messed, end of story. That's my view.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to finish behind bars, you simply need is to avoid rape, kidnap or rob.”

Jail Location Speculation

But the idea of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has shocked backers, four of whom this week inspected the prison in an apparent bid to discourage the supreme court from banishing him there.

The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was among that group, stated he expected the elderly leader to be imprisoned in the next 10 days and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s severe intestinal problems – the result of a near-fatal knife attack during the last election race – implied it would be hazardous to keep the ex-leader there. “His condition is extremely serious. He won’t be able to cope if they move him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” said the senator, who also expressed concern about overcrowded cells and the condition of inmate food.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells containing four dozen inmates: “It's virtually one meter squared per prisoner.

“We talked to the inmates and they grumble, naturally, of the terrible meals,” continued the senator.

Backers React

Lucas is not the sole person speaking out ahead of the one-time head of state's expected imprisonment.

Writing in a prominent publication, another ally, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” public service and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the largest political injustice in its history”.

“This is an unfairness that eats away the spirits of many people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

Mixed Popular Opinion

That may be true due to the substantial following Bolsonaro holds on the right-wing. Yet his expected imprisonment has also warmed the hearts of many others who believe he deserves to be imprisoned for planning to stop his successor from assuming office – and additionally plotting to have him killed.

Reimont Otoni, a congressman for the incumbent leader's Workers’ party, said: “Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in isolation. No one wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We desire him to obtain dignified treatment – but dignified treatment behind bars. He must not carry on being his personal jailer for his whole life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have long celebrating the tough treatment of convicts, had abruptly realized to their entitlements. “Just now has the far-right – which has consistently asserted that civil liberties should not be for criminals – opted to tour a penitentiary to learn what situations are actually like,” he remarked.

“The former president is a lawbreaker,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he deserved “humiliating, degrading conduct”.

Possible Incarceration Environment

Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently holds about 14,000 inmates, his probable assigned facility appears to be a nearby jail for police officers and other “special” detainees referred to as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

His potential cell are far more comfortable than those in the primary facility, although nevertheless a distant from the opulence Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the impressive official residence, about 20 kilometers away.

According to reports, the cell Bolsonaro could anticipate inhabit in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – approximately the size of a couple of car spots – and contains a 12 square meter restroom with a shower and a 12 sq metre balcony. “He could be permitted to have a TV and additionally a small fridge in his cell as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” information suggested.

Ideological Comments

The lawmaker criticized the rumoured idea to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a form of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who presided over Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will rule on his fate in the {
