Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting
No fewer than 16 individuals perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the victims who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the events leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
