More than 50 unaccompanied young refugees who went missing soon after reaching the UK and while under the supervision of the authorities are yet to be found, as per figures gathered.

Many of the missing children arrived in vessels or hidden in the cargo areas of vehicles and are believed to have been abducted by smugglers. Kent is frequently the location where they first land.

Official Data Shows Disturbing Statistics

Freedom of information information has documented 345 children disappearing from local care, with 56 of those yet to be located.

Between 2021 and 2023, when temporary accommodations for children operated in addition to similar establishments in various locations, 132 children vanished from these facilities. Among them, 108 were subsequently located but 24 are yet to be found.

Between 2020 and August 2025, 213 children went missing from welcome hubs for these minors, with 182 located and 32 still missing.

Ethnic Composition of Missing Children

In both cases, Albanian children were the most numerous nationality to go missing, accounting for a full half the overall number from the facilities, 68, and over 25% from the welcome hubs, 65.

The second and third largest ethnic groups to have disappeared from each location are individuals from Afghanistan then Iranian nationals.

"These figures are shocking. For every statistic is a terrified minor who will already have experienced grave mistreatment preceding their arrival in the UK looking for protection."

Legal experts emphasized that when supporting children who have fled after being trafficked whilst vanished, they see how their emotional and physical state is permanently harmed by the abuse they suffer during this time.

"If just one youth to disappear constitutes an total collapse of the state to protect the most fragile and exploited in their care. These statistics are in the multiple hundreds."

Necessary Steps to Resolve the Issue

Specialists stated additional actions are necessary to find the missing children. "These children did not elect to go missing. These minors should be participating in activities in the park and preparing for their exams, not being exploited by smuggling networks in conditions we know involve being restrained, abused and mistreated, and punished by being starved of food."

Regulatory Updates and Persistent Problems

In the end of 2023, after a long-running high court case relating to solitary migrant children missing from all temporary accommodations, the custom of typically placing children in hotels was deemed improper.

Subsequently, authorities agreed to increase protection for these children by enlarging the use of welcome hubs. Since that court ruling a further 44 children have vanished from these facilities, with 10 still missing and 34 found.

"When a minor does go missing, the risk that they are being exploited increases significantly and they are certainly more at risk to abuse and illegal trade."

Official Responses

A spokesperson stated: "Any child or adolescent disappearing from supervision is a major worry and we take each necessary step to protect them."

"Lone migrant youths are at risk to being exploited and mistreated due to their separation from loved ones and circumstances of their travels to the UK."

The representative said that qualified care professionals evaluated the children's vulnerability of being exploited with security procedures implemented in collaboration with external bodies, such as police and relevant departments.

Agencies also direct children to processes and support networks to help address the risk of mistreatment in the UK, involving the government assessment process and the specialized protection program. "Despite this it is difficult to stop each youth from vanishing."

Another spokesperson said: "The safety and welfare of solitary refugee minors remains a priority, and we take children disappearing very gravely. We carry on frequently assess our methods for new information if this happens, distributing pertinent data with local police forces and district officials investigating the issue."
