Igor Jesus Scores Twice as Nottingham Forest Conclude Europa League Group Stage with Win over Hungarian Opponents

Igor Jesus has now scored eleven strikes in all competitions for Nottingham Forest this campaign.

Match Summary

  • Forest were already through to the play-offs.
  • A Ferencvaros defender own goal gives Nottingham Forest a first-half lead.
  • The striker's European strike puts Forest in control.
  • Striker adds a third with a sharp finish in the latter period.
  • James McAtee rounds off a great display with a penalty.

The Brazilian attacker scored twice as Nottingham Forest concluded the league phase of the European competition with a comfortable win against their Hungarian visitors at the home stadium.

Forest had previously guaranteed a place in the next qualifying round and went into this fixture with a small chance of reaching the league's elite, even though they needed several results to go their way.

That did not happen but this assured performance will give the supporters confidence that their side can come through the two-legged play-off to reach the last 16.

A Ferencvaros midfielder struck the post with a headed effort inside the first 10 minutes for the away team – coached by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was dominantly the home side from then on.

Forest opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Ryan Yates' cross was deflected in by the defender and added a second four minutes later – Jesus squeezing a shot in at the far post for his 10th goal of the campaign.

The forward's eleventh goal arrived soon after the restart when he timed a run perfectly to break clear of the defence and then place a shot beyond the goalkeeper.

That goal killed off Ferencvaros' aspirations of making a comeback and instead the hosts scored again when the excellent James McAtee scored from a penalty after a infringement by the unfortunate Otvos inside the box on Dan Ndoye.

The Europa League knockout phase play-off lottery takes place on Friday, 30 January (12:00 GMT), where Forest might face either the Turkish side or the Greek club.

"It is not just the scoreline, there was that feel about it. I want these guys to do collectively well, the whole squad," said Forest boss Sean Dyche.

"That was another stride forward, but it is a positive step."

Forest Analysis: Striker Shines as New Signing Observes from Stands

Igor Jesus has been a standout performer for Nottingham Forest in European competition this term with half of his 11 goals scored in the Europa League.

This double also means he has scored a trio of strikes in his last two games and the prospect of competition for his position in attack could be providing motivation.

Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca was last week signed on loan and he was watching this game from the directors' box.

That may well have been on Jesus' mind as he was impressive against Ferencvaros, delivering two excellent finishes and generally being a menace to the visitors' defence with his pace and movement.

Jesus was not alone in catching the eye, with McAtee producing his best performance in a Nottingham Forest shirt since joining from Manchester City last summer, while the Swiss international also performed well.

Such positive showings will give Forest some renewed optimism as they switch focus to increasing the gap from the Premier League relegation zone when they host their London rivals on the weekend.

"All you can ask for is a response," added Dyche.

"I've never questioned their work ethic or their loyalty or integrity. It is just about displaying your ability.

"McAtee was excellent and Dan Ndoye was incredibly lively. Jesus got another couple and these are positive indicators."
