One can find numerous contenders for the designation as “world’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a new book, however, that honor belongs to a mechanised sawmill conceived by Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Before mechanised cutting, constructing a simple trading ship necessitated approximately ten lumberjacks laboring for three months,” notes the author. “With wind-driven sawmills, the same amount of processed timber might be produced within seven days.”
Thanks to this speedy automated cutter, that converted timber into boards with almost no human effort, the Dutch were able to build ships more quickly compared to anyone else, which sparked one hundred years of Netherlands maritime, economic and cultural supremacy across Europe and the globe.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, argues the writer, was “humanity’s first authentic factory machine.” A windmill turned a wheel. One component transformed its rotary motion into vertical action for the saw. A separate mechanism transformed the rotary motion into a sideway’s movement feeding the timber to the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the wood ahead one precise increment each cycle.
“Each element was simple on its own. The Dutchman’s genius was to combine them in order that they operated within a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing with each downward motion and advancing on every return motion. This constituted a remarkably clever application of fundamental components.”
